Alamos, Sonora Tour

Colonial charm, history and natural beauty
Alamos, Sonora, Mexico

It’s time we visited the historic and picturesque town of Alamos, Sonora.  Having promised several of you that we go, we are finally holding to our promise.

This tour incorporates history (Alamos was the home of the Spanish treasury during the Anza days), birding and nature, (we have hired a birding guide to take us to the best birding places) and native culture with a visit to the museums and cultural centers of the Yaqui and Mayo peoples in the municipalities of Navojoa and Huatabampo.

We will depart from Nogales, Sonora and drive to Alamos with several stops along the way.  The mini-bus will be staying with us for the entire trip so we may also investigate some of the surrounding area of Alamos.  Alamos is known for its old mansions and the plaza and church are some of the prettiest and most historic in Sonora.

Here is the currently planned itinerary:

Feb 19, 2018 (Monday)

Depart from the Quality Hotel Americana in Nogales, Arizona at 7:30 a.m.  to cross the border to Nogales, Sonora and depart on a mini-bus at 8:00 a.m.  It is a long trip to Alamos (about 8 ½ hours) but we will have several stops along the way including one for lunch.  There will be snacks and water on the mini-bus.  We will arrive in Alamos in the late afternoon / early evening.

Feb 20, 2018 (Tuesday)

We will do a walking tour of Alamos, check out the City Museum, church and plaza and some of the old houses.  We may want to take a ride to see the surrounding area and visit some of the small villages along the way.

Feb 21, 2018 (Wednesday)

Early departure for the birders of the group.  Our guide will meet us at about 6:00-6:30 a.m. to take us to some of his favorite spots.  This half-day tour will incorporate not only birding but include the flora of the surrounding area.  Do not forget your binoculars, hat, camera and sun screen.  The afternoon will be free for you to either rest or investigate more of Alamos, including all the shops.

Feb 22, 2018 (Thursday)

Today we depart Alamos for the Valley of the Mayo to learn more about the culture of the Yaqui and Mayo Indians.  We will visit museums, cultural centers and local villages, and watch performances by Fariseos, traditional masked Mayo dancers who perform during the Lenten season.  This is a great time to purchase hand-carved masks and handicrafts made by the locals.

Feb 23, 2018 (Friday)

It’s time to leave the area and head back home.  Once again, we will have several stops along the way.  I would expect we should arrive in Nogales, Sonora about 7:30 p.m.  The U.S. van will pick us up and transport back to the Quality Hotel Americana on Grand Avenue.
