A buggy ride in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora

We love to visit the charming, historic and culturally rich pueblo of Magdalena de Kino, Sonora. We start the tour at the Kino mission church of San Ignacio de Caborica, located in the pueblo of San Ignacio, which is in the municipality of Magdalena.

In Magdalena, we do a walking tour through the downtown historic area that includes a visit to the beautiful municipal building, the Palacio Municipal and Plaza Juarez.

We will spend the most time in Plaza Monumental, which has several areas of interest to explore. The beautiful church Santa Maria Magdalena bears the same name as the mission originally established here by Father Eusebio Francisco Kino in the late 1600’s. Father’s Kino’s remains can be viewed through windows at his crypt, located on the opposite side of the Plaza.

And adjacent to Plaza Monumental are quaint shops that sell a variety of religious and craft goods, and other tourist items like curios, hats, clothing and Magdalena keepsakes.

Our tour also includes lunch at a local restaurant and a visit to a local panaderia, bread store, for some delicious fresh-baked goods.

After we visit Magdalena we will typically also visit the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, a beautiful Kino mission church in Tubutama, Sonora. Read more about Kino Missions in Sonora, Mexico
